Ask what the fault-duty number represents
A quotation containing only a kA value is incomplete. Identify whether the value describes an RMS short-time current, a peak current or a breaking capability. For short-time duty, record the associated duration. These quantities address different demands and should not be substituted for one another.
Obtain the applicable network study from the project designer. It should identify the location, permitted source combinations and clearing assumptions behind the required duty. A future additional source can change those assumptions even if normal load current remains modest.
Review the whole current path
Busbar performance depends on the arrangement in which the conductors operate: joints, supports, phase spacing, connections and enclosure construction all matter. A copper-area calculation is therefore not the complete evidence package for a manufactured assembly.
| Review item | Buyer input | Supplier evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Short-time duty | RMS current and stated duration | Declared assembly capability and scope |
| Peak duty | Applicable calculated or specified peak | Corresponding supported rating |
| Circuit path | Incomers, couplers and extension interfaces | Drawings identifying the relevant arrangement |
| Support construction | Installation and connection constraints | Applicable verified support and joint design |
| Protection dependence | Device and clearing assumptions | Any conditions on the offered withstand claim |
IEC 62271-200 covers applicable metal-enclosed MV assemblies. Use the agreed standard and evidence for the assembly being ordered; the publication's existence does not verify a particular busbar construction. IEC assembly scope.
Do not convert durations casually
A buyer may receive a report at one duration and a tender requirement at another. Do not accept a simple thermal calculation as proof that every aspect of the assembly remains covered. Ask the responsible supplier and engineer to explain the permitted assessment method and any mechanical or test limitations.
The same caution applies to changes after quotation. Moving supports, changing joints or adding an adapter can affect the relationship between the offered construction and its supporting evidence. Require the revised arrangement to be reviewed before manufacture.
Example: the coupler is omitted from the comparison
Imagine a project with two incomers and a bus coupler. The initial review checks the incomer panels, but the allowed operating philosophy later includes both sources feeding the connected bus. The relevant fault contribution and paths now need a coordinated review, including the coupler and interconnecting conductors.
The buyer should request an updated study and an applicability response for every affected assembly section. A compliant-looking report for one feeder panel cannot be used to assume that all new connections and operating states are covered.
Connect the document review to delivery
Ask for a schedule linking required fault duty to drawings, declared ratings and supporting records. Record any dependence on a specified protective device or operating restriction. Keep these conditions with the owner documentation so later expansion does not ignore the original basis.
For a medium-voltage switchgear package, send the network fault-duty schedule, source diagram and required current-duration values through the project enquiry page. Request evidence for the actual offered lineup and connections. Internal arc classification and breaker interruption are separate questions and should retain their own requirements.
